After a long work day or stressful week, we all need something to help wind down and relax. For certain people, they like to blow off steam and want to release whatever frustration they have built up. And a lot of them take to getting outside more, working out, and/or participating in yoga. But for some of us, that isn’t good enough. For some of us, we just can’t let certain things go, or have too much going on, and so our sad attempt at being zen, fails. And it’s tough to find an activity that really suits all of us, that we actually want to do. But now, for those who aren’t as laid back, or as zen as their friends are, they can participate in rage yoga.
Yoga, for a lot of people, helps to “cultivate discernment, awareness, self-regulation and higher consciousness,” ("The Purpose of Yoga"- NYTimes). And with mainstream ideas, Americans tend to sell this activity with several advantages like “reduced stress, increased relaxation, and greater flexibility,” when the problem is, a lot of gyms and other businesses focus solely on the physical aspect of it “without teaching the essential self-awareness that differentiates yoga from any exercise”- until now.
Rage Yoga -[reyj yoh-guh] is "a practice involving stretching, positional exercises and bad humor, with the goal of attaining good health and to become zen"AF." It's "more than just a practice, Rage Yoga is an attitude.”
This new type of yoga, developed by Lindsay Istace, goes beyond the average tree pose, or downward dog, in that participants don’t just use a yoga mat to stretch and chill out, but are encouraged to partake with their favorite adult beverage, and yes, rage. The techniques aren't only to focus on breathing and a relaxed core, but mainly letting go and “giving less Fs.”
First introduced in Austin, TX, Rage Yoga now has sign ups online and other classes have been popping up around the country. And this type of class isn't for those necessarily advanced at yoga, but anyone who needs a little break from their day to day stress. Whether you’re a doctor or lawyer, student, mother or father, you might need this class in your life. Instead of breathing in, and slowly breathing out, rage yoga says to let it all out, and not slowly, but aggressively, and without feeling self conscious or overwhelmed by the complicated poses.
So, bring a mat, towel, water and adult beverage of your choosing, and rock out, rage out- just let it all out, with Rage Yoga.
