Vegan Sues Burger King For Their Impossible Whopper, And Twitter Stood Up For The King

By Channing Hertel

November 22, 2019

We all have our preferences and specific tastes in tv shows, movies, style, or fashion, and most definitely, in what we eat. If there’s a group of friends or coworkers all deciding on where to go for lunch or dinner, the real question is: What type of cuisine? Italian? Mediterranean? Asian-fusion? Or more specifically, what kind of food? Salad? Subs? Tacos? Burgers? The options are endless!- or so it seems.

Everyone, or mostly everyone, has that friend, the vegetarian friend who says they “don’t care where they eat, as long as there’s something they can eat.” But honestly, the options aren’t always as satisfying for vegetarians as it is for all our meat eating friends, but it’s probably slightly troublesome deciding on where to eat being vegan with a group of friends who aren’t.

It’s difficult enough sometimes for vegetarians to have all the options carnivores do, but it has to be nearly impossible (that's right, pun intended) for a vegan.

While the term vegan can mean someone is vegan for dietary, philosophical, ethical and/or environmental reasons, a dietary vegan is respectively considered a “strict vegetarian,” who won’t consume “meat, eggs, dairy products” or “any other animal- derived substances.” And even though it used to be very troublesome to find places to eat out, it isn’t as difficult as it once was for individuals on a plant-based only diet.

Now, there are more restaurants than ever that offer vegetarian and (limited) vegan options and substitutes. And some of those businesses include a few fast food places!

Not all fast food restaurants that we know and love have enough variety for those who don’t want a beef patty on their burger. But we do know, it was only a matter of time (and enough influence), to get the trend going. So, businesses like White Castle and Burger King offer a meat-free patty, like the “Impossible Burger" which is completely plant-based for people who want the same (or similar) great taste that isn’t exactly the same.

In today’s society, we really can’t expect to please everyone, and that means even the fast food burger joints who have tried to cater to their least likely of customers. But one man took it to another level, and decided to follow through with legal action.

“Burger King is reportedly being sued by a man who says its wildly popular meatless Impossible Whopper is being contaminated because it is cooked on the same grill as a regular burger.”

We can see where the guy is coming from, but not all of us, especially with this disclaimer, literally on Burger King’s website, and menu:

At an Atlanta, Georgia drive-through, Phillip Williams ordered an Impossible Whopper, Burger King’s plant-based alternative to it’s infamous Whopper. But afterwards, during legal proceedings, Williams claimed he “would not have paid a premium price” had he been aware BK's method for cooking the patty would end up “coated in meat by-products.” And regardless some still feel they are on Williams’ side of this controversy, not everyone is. So, when the story went viral, Twitter did not hold back, but stuck up for The King.

Since the legal action began, in regards to the disclaimer or different cooking options offered, Williams’ lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.” Not to mention, Impossible Foods Inc, which helped create the Impossible Whopper for the well-known restaurant, stated they

“designed the product for meat eaters who want to consume less animal protein, not for vegans or vegetarians.”

And apparently, for those who are hard-core vegans:

“There is a microwave prep procedure that they’re welcome to ask for in any store.” - -Dana Worth, (Head of sales: Impossible Foods)

So, regardless of your personal preference, dietary needs, or restrictions, always read the menu! And be aware that when dining out, we might not have control over how our food is prepped, prepared, or served. So, dine out with caution, or just don’t go to where they serve items that could potentially be contaminated by other products.

Our Favorite 90’s Sitcom To Auction Props And Give Back To Charity

By Channing Hertel

November 22, 2019

Since the show aired 25 years ago on NBC in 1994, Friends, the American sitcom tv series, got the attention and praise of millions of viewers. The all-star cast of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, graced our television screens at home with their 20-30 something lives filled with dating drama, workforce struggles, family relationships, and of course, friendship, continuously providing us with lots of laughter and tons of one-liners we still use today. And now we can recreate their episodes, or pay tribute to them with official props from the set!

The episodes of Friends didn’t just charm and warm our hearts, but provided viewers with storylines we can all relate to. And in honor of the show’s 25th year anniversary, Props Store and Warner Bros. Television have announced they are holding an exclusive auction of props from all 10 seasons.

The auction will include props like costumes and scripts, to iconic materials like the Central Perk Coffee Shop couch:

Joey Tribbiani’s headshot:

Monica and Chandler’s wedding announcement/invite:

And because we can’t celebrate Thanksgiving without it - the iconic turkey Monica had on her head in, “The One with All the Thanksgivings” where Chandler tells her he loves her:

More than 80 lots will be available for bidding online, starting December 3rd. And “every piece in the auction comes directly from the Warner Bros. Archive with an original Warner Bros. Certificate of Authenticity.” Plus, all the proceeds will be sent to The Trevor Project for suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people, just in time for Giving Tuesday (HollywoodReporter).

Prop Store COO Brandon Alinger says that the company is “thrilled to be working with Warner Bros. to auction some incredible material” and recognizes the “series gave us so many laughs during its original run and continues to entertain and inspire fans around the world" (CNN). So, there’s no doubt that the auction will go over well and be a huge success for giving back to The Trevor Project.

Now we can live a little like Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey and Ross, in our apartment away from Manhattan, but in our own Central Perk themed living room.

People’s Choice Awards Fashion Icon Reveals Who Influenced Her

By Channing Hertel

November 13, 2019

Every year The People’s Choice Awards (aka E! People’s Choice Awards) honors people in entertainment- from television and movies, to music and pop culture. The production has various categories that the general public and fans vote for online, and some of which include: Favorite All-Around Movie, Favorite Movie Actor, Favorite Leading Lady, Favorite On-Screen Match-Up, Favorite Tour, Favorite Hair, and many more. And this year, we got really excited about who fans voted for as their Fashion Icon.

Like every awards show, actors, singer/songwriters, musicians, celebrities, and other social influencers and personalities show up and show off for the event. Fans and viewers tune in to see which of their favorite celebs wear and rock on the red carpet, and 2019’s Fashion Icon really lived up to her nomination.

E! People’s Choice Awards dubbed Gwen Stefani the award for their Fashion Icon. In the past, only one other person has been awarded with the title, Victoria Beckham, but we aren’t surprised by Stefani being the second honored. Her evolution from No Doubt in the 90’s, to what she is now, is really something, and not only to look up to, but share and be inspired by. But who was her inspiration?

Many of us have watched Stefani who gained success in her career like this:

And since then, we’ve seen the star evolve over time from a punk rocker, to solo music mogul, and now a fashion icon (even though we think she’s been one all along).

While Stefani has always sang and been involved in music, she’s also been drawn to fashion. And even though she used to think it wasn’t for her, and would go to thrift stores to make her own clothes, she has transformed herself into someone who now motivates others with fashion in the same way her mother and grandmother did for her.

When giving her speech at the award show, Stefani said “I always loved fashion, it was one of those instinctual things," and told the audience how her mother and grandmother would sew their own clothing.

My mom would come home from school, and my grandma would have made her prom dress, so I feel like my favorite thing in my life is to go to the fabric store with my mom and pick out different looks … it was always there, so the fact that this is happening now is hard to imagine, because it’s just what I do.”

Regardless of Stefani being brought up thinking certain types of fashion were only for those who had money, she expressed she now loves it and “one of the biggest blessings of the whole thing is just all the amazing, talented designers and people that have taught me all the things that I know.” So, we understand how it must have been “hard to digest,” yet admire how Stefani has come full circle from something that began in her childhood and fostered it into a career as an adult.

I mean, who wouldn't want to be this fabulous?

"Rage Yoga"- Helping The Less Zen Blow Off Steam

By Channing Hertel

October 23, 2019

After a long work day or stressful week, we all need something to help wind down and relax. For certain people, they like to blow off steam and want to release whatever frustration they have built up. And a lot of them take to getting outside more, working out, and/or participating in yoga. But for some of us, that isn’t good enough. For some of us, we just can’t let certain things go, or have too much going on, and so our sad attempt at being zen, fails. And it’s tough to find an activity that really suits all of us, that we actually want to do. But now, for those who aren’t as laid back, or as zen as their friends are, they can participate in rage yoga.

Yoga, for a lot of people, helps to “cultivate discernment, awareness, self-regulation and higher consciousness,” ("The Purpose of Yoga"- NYTimes). And with mainstream ideas, Americans tend to sell this activity with several advantages like “reduced stress, increased relaxation, and greater flexibility,” when the problem is, a lot of gyms and other businesses focus solely on the physical aspect of it “without teaching the essential self-awareness that differentiates yoga from any exercise”- until now.

Rage Yoga -[reyj yoh-guh] is "a practice involving stretching, positional exercises and bad humor, with the goal of attaining good health and to become zen"AF." It's "more than just a practice, Rage Yoga is an attitude.”

This new type of yoga, developed by Lindsay Istace, goes beyond the average tree pose, or downward dog, in that participants don’t just use a yoga mat to stretch and chill out, but are encouraged to partake with their favorite adult beverage, and yes, rage. The techniques aren't only to focus on breathing and a relaxed core, but mainly letting go and “giving less Fs.”

First introduced in Austin, TX, Rage Yoga now has sign ups online and other classes have been popping up around the country. And this type of class isn't for those necessarily advanced at yoga, but anyone who needs a little break from their day to day stress. Whether you’re a doctor or lawyer, student, mother or father, you might need this class in your life. Instead of breathing in, and slowly breathing out, rage yoga says to let it all out, and not slowly, but aggressively, and without feeling self conscious or overwhelmed by the complicated poses.

So, bring a mat, towel, water and adult beverage of your choosing, and rock out, rage out- just let it all out, with Rage Yoga.
